Eric was a member of the Cadets of Bergen County, NJ, a member team of Drum Corps International (DCI), in their 1995-1996 season.
He earned his Bachelor and Master degrees in music from the University of Florida, receiving his M.A. in 2000. He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity.
Eric accepted the position of Director of Bands at Fort Pierce Central High School in 2000. It was his first teaching job. He was a popular and well-liked teacher who sought to develop his students and the school's music and performance programs. Before the summer of 2002, he had asked his school's principal for a laptop computer so that he could work out half-time routines for the upcoming fall football season.
In addition, 2002 was also Eric's first year on the horn staff of the Kiwanis Kavaliers Drum Corps, also a member team of DCI. While the Kavaliers were at the SUNY-Cortland campus during their summer tour, Eric chose to take his life.
Eric was a member of the Indian River Presbyterian Church in Fort Pierce, Florida.
Survivors include his parents, Carl "Andy" Olivenbaum and Melissa Gano Olivenbaum of Gainesville; a sister, Laurie Olivenbaum; a brother, David Olivenbaum; and a grandmother, Enid Olivenbaum. He leaves behind many friends and students who mourn his loss.
